Harrellsville
is a small, quiet town of less than 100 residents, located in Hertford County in the northeastern corner of the state. A post office was established here in 1827 when the settlement was known as "Bethel." In 1833 Abner Harrell became the town's postmaster and the community was renamed in his honor. Hertford County is rich in history and is known for its' scenic, recreational waterways, including the broad Chowan River, which is prized for its' excellent bass fishing. History buffs will enjoy a tour of the nearby town of Murfreesboro, a Colonial riverport village dating back to 1787. The town offers a wide variety of Early American architecture and has a 12-block district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also, if you're in the mood for shopping, Hertford County is the retail center for the four surrounding counties of the region. Both U.S. Highway 13 and U.S. Highway 158 intersect in Hertford County, making trips to the beaches of North Carolina's Outer Banks a snap (just two hours away.) Other recreational activities available in the area include canoeing, hiking and biking, birding and camping. The town of Murfreesboro is also host to the Annual North Carolina Watermelon Festival, usually held in August.

The Gulf Stream and latitude are the most influencing factors in North Carolina's coastal weather. Along the immediate coast, warm water eddies from the Gulf Stream help moderate winter air temperatures, especially along the Outer Banks. Coastal fronts are common during the winter and can push inland, bringing with it warmer than normal temperatures. However, at times, it can meet with the cold Labrador Current and the two opposing currents can cause rough weather for a short duration. There is no distinct wet or dry season in North Carolina, average rainfall varies throughout the year. Summer precipitation is normally the greatest with showers and thunderstorms. Autumn is the driest season. Snow and sleet occur once or twice per year along the coast. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence North Carolina weather about twice in an average year.
