Mayo-Lake
is located near the town of Roxboro in Person County in the north central part of the state, near the Virginia state line. It's a beautiful, 2,800-acre lake with 85 miles of shoreline and a 120-acre park. Lots of recreational activities are available around the lake, including swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and golf and picnicking. Guided interpretive hikes are given in the summer months around Mayo Lake, and trails with plant identification plaques for self-guided tours are also posted around the lake. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent, and a one-day Canoe/Kayak Festival is held at Lake Mayo each spring. Person County is a link to the bicycling highways located throughout North Carolina, with its' route just south of the Virginia border. This winding bike trail passes through peaceful, rural scenery and "Share the Road" bike signs are posted to alert motorists of the presence of bicyclists. Roxboro, the closest town to Mayo Lake, is set among rolling hills and farms, and offers shopping and restaurants, theater, concerts and historic sites. Tours are available of Roxboro's commercial district, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Other attractions near Mayo Lake include Hyco Lake, a 3,750-acre lake with a 65-acre park, and the Piedmont Community College Nature Trail.

The North Central Heartland has a beautiful four-season climate. The single most influencing factor in temperature is the altitude, but the central portion of the state is protected from the cold winter winds thanks to the western mountain ranges. Extreme cold and snow is rare outside the high mountain regions. In summer, the warmest days are found in the interior rather than near the coast. Autumn is the season of most rapidly changing temperature. There is no distinct wet or dry season in North Carolina - precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year, with thundershowers possible in spring and summer. Humidity levels are generally highest in winter and lowest in spring. North Carolina is outside the normal path of tornadoes in the United States, but tropical hurricanes do come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
