Southern-Pines is located in Moore County west of Fayetteville along U.S. Highway 1 near the Fort Bragg Military Reservation. Moore County is geographically located in the center portion of the state, with the northwest quadrant being in the "Piedmont" region, and the rest of the county being in the "Sandhills," or coastal plains. Southern Pines is most well-known for the Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, a 525-acre area containing hiking trails, a museum and a sound-activated "night sounds" display highlighting various animals of the sandhills. The preserve is free to the public, and open every day except Christmas. Other area attractions include 40 championship golf courses, the North Carolina Speedway, Rockingham Dragway, horseracing, tennis, hiking and biking trails. Southern Pines is just a short drive to the village of Pinehurst, which is considered one of the great golf regions of the world. Donald Ross, the great American golf architect, designed seven outstanding golf courses in the Pinehurst area, where you'll also find fine dining, shopping and first-class resorts. History buffs will want to visit the nearby city of Fayetteville and its four designated historic district: Downtown Historic District, Haymount Historic District, Liberty Point National Register District and Market House Square National Register District.

Southern Pines Weather & Climate

The Piedmont Plateau in central North Carolina has become popular with retirees looking for a moderate climate. The region is protected by the western mountain ranges in winter, so the cold, snowy conditions of the mountainous ski resorts is less common here in the warmer east. Summer weather is the least variable and the most predictable - often with very calm conditions. Wind speeds are also much lower in summer than in winter. Intense, short-lived local showers are often common on a summer afternoon, although occasionally there are more widespread, gentle rain showers. Autumn is the driest season. Average humidity does not vary greatly from season to season, and the lowest levels are found over the southern Piedmont region. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
