Weldon
is a small town located on the banks of the Roanoke River in Halifax County near the Virginia state line. This is a very historic area, known as The Roanoke River Valley of Northeastern North Carolina, settled in early 1700s by colonists who came to the fertile valley to farm. Just south of Weldon is the town of Halifax, which was the commercial and political center in the area at the time of the American Revolution. A guided walking tour of Halifax includes the 1760 home of a merchant, the house and law office of a 19th century attorney, a jail, a tavern and other authentically restored buildings are also on the tour. During the Christmas holidays, the buildings of old Halifax are adorned with period decorations. Other activities near Weldon include recreation on the Roanoke River. Choose from swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking and wildlife viewing. River Falls Park in Weldon is a still water harbor with easy access to the river, with an overlook that offers views of the river's rapids. The park also has picnicking areas and an entry point to the Roanoke Canal Trail, which is a scenic trail for biking that contains some of the best preserved 19th century canal construction in the country. Several public golf courses are also located near the town of Weldon. Other attractions in the area include the Canal Arts Center in Roanoke Rapids, Independence Station (an artisans' gallery in Halifax,) Lake Gaston and Medoc Mountain State Park.

The North Central region of the state has a moderate climate; four seasons without the extremes seen in other parts of the country. Latitude accounts for some climatic variations, as do soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. The central region, in winter, is protected by the western mountain ranges. In summer, when the air is dry enough to keep cloudiness at a minimum for several days, temperatures may reach 100 in the interior at elevations below 1,500 feet. Usually, however, clouds limit the sun's heating capacity and an entire summer sometimes passes without a high of even 90 degrees. North Carolina is outside the usual tornado path in the United States, but tropical hurricanes do come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
