Andrews is an unspoiled town located in the western corner of the state within the Nantahala National Forest. The town sits in a picturesque valley that is surrounded by the Snowbird Mountains to the north and east. Most people come here for the spectacular scenery and to relax and just enjoy the leisurely pace of life. Things have not changed much in Andrews over the years, although it is the largest town in the Valley Town Township, which also includes the communities of Marble and Topton. Originally an Indian trading post established in 1837, Andrews has arts and crafts shops, restaurants and antique stores scattered along the main streets of town. Recreation abounds in the area, where you can go whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River or horseback riding in the National Forest. Take a unique Llama Trek through the mountains or hike to hidden waterfalls - all of this and much more, like canoeing, kayaking, trout fishing, boating, mountain biking - even gem mining is available in the Andrews area. Nearby points of interest include The Great Smoky Mountains Railway, the Cherokee County Historical Museum, John C. Campbell Folk School, Fort Butler, the Trail of Tears at Tatham Gap, Hiwassee Dam and Lake and the Tellico ORV Area. Andrews is also home to the Annual WNC Wagon Train, which is the highlight of their Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration, and an Annual Fall Car Show. Andrews is just two hours from Asheville, Knoxville, Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia.

Andrews Weather & Climate

The Mountains, due to their mild summer temperatures, have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Midsummer afternoon temperatures average only around 80 degrees at elevations of 3,000 feet or higher. Nights are crisp and cool, but seldom too cold for outdoor activities or camping. In winter, snowfall is likely most years, but ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply. Large amounts of snow and extreme low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Rainfall is common in spring and summer. In spring, storm systems that bring cold weather southward reach North Carolina less often and less forcefully than in other parts of the country. Occasional invasions of cool dry air from the north continue during the summer, but are of short duration. Fall has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
