Topton is a small town located near Lake Nantahala in the mountains of western North Carolina. Here, the mountains stand guard over quaint, country towns and sparkling lakes and streams, making it a perfect place for a quiet and relaxing vacation. Activities on the Lake Nantahala include swimming, boating and fishing, with hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and camping available onshore. The nearby Nantahala River, which is just south of the lake, is well known for its whitewater rafting and fly-fishing, and upstream from all the whitewater action are quite a few impression waterfalls. Just past the falls, take Wayah Road for a very scenic drive to Wayah Bald and its mile-high overlook from an old stone firetower. The town of Topton is also just a short drive to Maggie Valley, which attracts skiers and snowboarders from all over the East Coast to its snowy peaks in the wintertime. The town of Franklin is approximately 18 miles away and is known for its gem mining, antique shops, art galleries and fine restaurants. The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, Cherokee Indian Reservation and Great Smoky Mountains National Park are less than an hour away from Topton, and the Smoky Mountains resort town of Gatlinburg is an hour and a half away.

Topton Weather & Climate

The Mountains of North Carolina range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Snow may fall in March, but by May, things warm up with daytime highs in the 80s. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in the summertime. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur in the mountains. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations.
