Carova
lies north of Corolla on the Outer Banks near the Virginia state line, and is considered "the final frontier" in Currituck County. The name "Carova" comes from its' close proximity to both North Carolina and Virginia. Vast stretches of undeveloped barrier beaches are found here, and the area has been described as "one of the 10 best undiscovered beaches on the East Coast," by USA Weekend. A few families do live here year round, but mostly it's vacation homes and vacation rentals, and development is likely to always be limited because there is no paved road to Carova. Highway 12, which runs along the Outer Banks from Ocracoke to Corolla, comes to an abrupt end just north of Corolla. From there, it's a four-wheel drive enthusiasts paradise, where you'll see nothing except preserved maritime woods and wetlands, white sandy beaches, wild horses, old Coast Guard stations and vacation cottages. The houses are mostly nestled in the woods, and a series of dirt roads behind the sand dune line gives residents access to the homes. To the north of Carova is a fence that runs from the sound to the ocean and marks the Virginia border. On the Virginia side of the fence lies False Cape State Park and Back Bay Wildlife Refuge, where hiking and camping are available. The Currituck Banks Estuarine Reserve is on the south end of this stretch of land, and the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge encompasses about 4,000 acres of land on the Currituck Banks. Vacationing in Carova is a chance to experience an untouched barrier island environment - a place to definitely get away from it all.

The Outer Banks weather is generally mild year round. Sunshine is abundant; an average of 126 days per year are clear, 117 party cloudy, 122 cloudy and 120 days with measurable rainfall. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence North Carolina weather about twice in an average year. About once every 10 years, these storms strike a part of the State with sufficient force to do damage to inland property. Expect summer air temperatures to be cooler along the immediate coastline than even just a few miles inland. Mid-summer ocean water temperatures are around 80°F along the entire coast, making it very suitable for ocean recreation. The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on winter weather, especially on the immediate coast. Though it lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from the Gulf Stream and helps moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks.
