Corolla
is the northernmost accessible town located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Until 1984, Corolla was little more than a sleepy little seaside village, where wild horses roamed among the sea grasses and dunes. However, that was the year the state extended Highway 12 north from the Dare County line, and Corolla began to grow and prosper into the desirable, upscale vacation resort town it is today. The northern beaches around Corolla have been named among "the 10 best undiscovered beaches on the East Coast," by USA Weekend. Fishing, swimming, surfing, parasailing, boating, shelling and crabbing - it's all possible in Corolla. Sadly, the wild horses that were once part of the mystique of the Outer Banks are gone, except for the ones in the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. The Currituck Lighthouse, built in 1875, is a 180-foot red brick structure that towers over the landscape, and is the northernmost of all the Carolina lighthouses. It is open for climbing in the summer months, and also features a small museum and restored lightkeeper's house. At the center of town is the Currituck Lighthouse Complex, which serves as a waterfowl museum. The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island and the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse are both just a 1-½ hour drive from Corolla.

The Outer Banks weather is generally mild year round. Sunshine is abundant; an average of 126 days per year are clear, 117 party cloudy, 122 cloudy and 120 days with measurable rainfall. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence North Carolina weather about twice in an average year. About once every 10 years, these storms strike a part of the State with sufficient force to do damage to inland property. Expect summer air temperatures to be cooler along the immediate coastline than even just a few miles inland. Mid-summer ocean water temperatures are around 80°F along the entire coast, making it very suitable for ocean recreation. The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on winter weather, especially on the immediate coast. Though it lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from the Gulf Stream and helps moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks.
