Cashiers
,pronounced "Cash'ers" is best described as a tranquil getaway located high in the mountains of southwestern North Carolina. Located near the spot that North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina meet, Cashiers is surrounded by mountains rising to 5,000 feet, picturesque tiny towns, lush forests, cascading waterfalls, rushing streams and wildflowers. If this sounds unbelievable - wait until you see it. The conjoining of the Nantahala, Pisgah, and Chattahoochie National Forests has kept this area pristine, and it also contains some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. The best known are Bridal Veil Falls, Dry Falls and Whitewater Falls, the highest falls in the eastern United States. It drops more than 400 feet in a stunning display of cascades, and crosses the state line into South Carolina as it descends. Picnicking is permitted at the falls, and there is one spot that offers gorgeous views of the mountains. In Cashiers you can hike a forest trail, raft the nearby Nantahala and Ocoee Rivers, go mountain biking, fly fishing, kayaking, snow skiing or golfing. The town of Cashiers has a two-acre Village Green, with walking paths and a pavilion. Small shops offer North Carolina arts and crafts, antiques, handmade furniture and gourmet food. You can stay in a country inn or lodge and dine on mouthwatering cuisine as you watch the sun set over the mountains. Cashiers is a delightful experience, and one that should be discovered at your own pace.

The westernnmost mountain region of North Carolina is the smallest of the three main divisions of the state; the Coastal Plain, the Piedmont and the Mountains. However, its' range of elevation is the greatest; it stretches upward from around 1,500 feet along the eastern boundary to 6,684 feet at the summit of Mt. Mitchell. The climate is definitely effected by elevation. Overall, spring is unpredictable, summer is warm with moderate humidity, autumn is crisp and cool and winters are cold - but moderate. More extreme winter conditions can be expected at the mountain peaks. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the lower elevations. Although snow in winter is likely, most ski resorts rely on snowmaking equipment because daytime highs can often hover in the 40-degree range.
