Edenton
has often been called "the south's prettiest small town." It's also one of the south's most historic towns and attracts approximately 35,000 tourists each year. If you're a history buff, you'll love Edenton which was first established in the late 17th century, and in 1728 became the colonial capital of North Carolina. It became a regular port of call for ships carrying slaves, food, goods and for the shipping of agricultural products to European ports. Today it's a charming town full of old-time atmosphere, with streets lined with homes built by the planters and merchants who first settled along the Albemarle Sound. There are over 25 homes and buildings in Edenton that comprise the North Carolina State Historic Site, where many special events and seasonal tours are held throughout the year. Another interesting historical note about Edenton is that it was the site of the "other tea party" - held in 1774 by the women of the town - it is one of the first recorded instances of American women taking political action. For outdoor recreational activities, Edenton is near the Outer Banks' region along North Carolina's "Crystal Coast," and the popular beaches of Kitty Hawks, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. The Kitty Hawk Pier offers the best fishing in the area, and Nags Head also has swimming, fishing, nature walks and golf.

The Gulf Stream and latitude are the most influencing factors in North Carolina's coastal weather. Along the immediate coast, warm water eddies from the Gulf Stream help moderate winter air temperatures, especially along the Outer Banks. Coastal fronts are common during the winter and can push inland, bringing with it warmer than normal temperatures. However, at times, it can meet with the cold Labrador Current and the two opposing currents can cause rough weather for a short duration. There is no distinct wet or dry season in North Carolina, average rainfall varies throughout the year. Summer precipitation is normally the greatest with showers and thunderstorms. Autumn is the driest season. Snow and sleet occur once or twice per year along the coast. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence North Carolina weather about twice in an average year.
