Lake Hickory is approximately one hour from the city of Charlotte. Swimming, fishing, boating, jet skiing and water skiing are all available on Lake Hickory, with hiking, biking, golf and sightseeing opportunities available in the surrounding area. The rolling hills of the countryside are dotted with apple trees, peaceful farms and gardens. Alexander County is known for its' apples, so if you're visiting during fall harvest, be sure and visit one of the local orchards and take home a basket full of them. Points of special interest near Lake Hickory include Rocky Face Mountain (a great place to hike with awesome views from the summit,) the Alexander Railroad Company's "June Bug," which is a locally owned and operated, short-line railroad, and the Old Jail Museum and Matheson Park in Taylorsville. The village of Taylorsville is also home to a weekly farmer's market in the summer and an annual Apple Festival in October. The Brushy Mountain Motor Sports Park is also located near Lake Hickory, consisting of more than 1,700 acres, including 40 acres for off-road vehicles. Lake Hickory Weather & Climate

North Carolina's Heartland has a moderate, four-season climate. The single most important factor in the state that influences weather is altitude. The Heartland is partially protected by the western mountain ranges from the cold air that moves across the central States. The temperature drops to 10 to 12 degrees about once during an average winter over central North Carolina. Extreme cold temperatures are rare outside the mountains. The warmest days are found in the interior rather than near the coast. Autumn is the driest season and the season of most rapidly changing temperature. There is no distinct wet or dry season in the state, although July is usually the wettest month. North Carolina is outside the principal tornado area of the U.S., but still averages two or three per year. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
