Lake-Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, and is located just 18 miles northwest of Charlotte. This huge lake is sometimes called an "Inland Sea," and has over 520 miles of gorgeous shoreline. The Lake Norman region is comprised of several small towns and communities surrounding the lake and Lake Norman State Park. Just a few of the outdoor activities available here are swimming, boating and sailing, fishing, water skiing, camping, hiking and picnicking. An old time Mississippi paddle wheel boat takes visitors around the lake, and use of the boat launch area is free. There are several hiking trails that loop around Lake Norman, from an easy .8 mile to a lengthier 6.5-mile trail. If you tire of the outdoors or simply want a change of pace, the Lake Norman area has lots of shopping and entertainment, historical sites, art exhibits and museums to explore. Lake Norman is also the site of many fishing tournaments, boat shows, county fairs and festivals throughout the year. The popular Lake Norman Festival is usually held in May in nearby Mooresville and includes fireworks and a parade. Other events include the Old Time Fiddlers and Bluegrass Festival, Apple Festival, and the Loch Norman Highland Games. With clean, fresh air, natural beauty and outdoor fun, Lake Norman promises to be a relaxing and yet fun-filled vacation destination for all.

Lake Norman Weather & Climate

The Heartland, near the city of Charlotte, has a moderate, four-season climate. The single most important factor in the state that influences weather is altitude. The Heartland, or central part of the state, is partially protected by the western mountain ranges from the cold air that moves southeastward across the central States. Extreme cold temperatures are rare outside the mountains. The warmest days are found in the interior rather than near the coast. Autumn is the driest season and the season of most rapidly changing temperature. There is no distinct wet or dry season in the state, although July is usually the wettest month. North Carolina is outside the principal tornado area of the U.S., but still averages two or three per year, mostly east of the Mountains in the spring. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
