Linville
is one of North Carolina's premier mountain vacation destinations near the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Pisgah National Forest and Grandfather Mountain. It is home to such natural wonders as Linville Falls and Linville Gorge, and was first designated a wild area in 1951 and became one of the original components of the National Wilderness System in 1964. The Linville River rushes from high on Grandfather Mountain to form one of Eastern America's most scenic and rugged gorges. For twelve miles the steep walls enclose the river as the swift waters descend over 2,000 feet before breaking into the open levels of the Catawba Valley. Recreation opportunities include whitewater rafting, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, fishing and hunting. The gorge includes 39 miles of trails; much of it considered a primitive area, however an easy-to-moderate trail leads to the falls. Grandfather Mountain, near Linville, is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge and is considered the most biologically diverse mountain in the eastern North America. Visitors can drive to the crest and enjoy spectacular scenery along the way, and at the one-mile elevation marker, take an adventurous walk across the Mile High Swinging Bridge. Linville is near the resort towns of Banner Elk and Beech Mountain where you will find plenty of fine restaurants, local arts and crafts and antique shops.

The Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations, although ski resorts rely on snowmaking equipment to ensure a good base. Fall often has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
