Old-Fort
is a small, historic community of less than 1,000 residents located in McDowell County within the Pisgah National Forest. It lies between Asheville and Morganton along US Hwy 70 near Black Mountain and the Catawba River. Old Fort was originally built by the colonial militia before the Declaration of Independence and the settlement served as the western outpost of the early United States for many years. A 30-foot tall arrowhead hand chiseled in granite sits on the town square as a symbol of peace between early pioneers and Native Americans. After the arrival of the railroad, Old Fort became home to a resort hotel and a geyser, a manmade tourist attraction powered by a nearby spring. Today, the geyser lies in the middle of a five-sided concrete pool, with a large green space for picnicking surrounding it. The Mountain Gateway Museum in Old Fort sits near the center of town along Mill Creek inside the old community center, built in 1937. Inside, visitors can watch a 14-minute video on the history of the town and view a display on what the inside of a log cabin looked like in frontier days. Two original log cabins are on the grounds of the museum, and each April the town holds Pioneer Day, a reenactment of early days with music and food. Other attractions in Old Fort include the Railroad Museum and its' Mountain Music and Hoedowns, held every Friday night in the hall across from the Fire Department.

Old Fort Weather & Climate

The Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations, although ski resorts rely on snowmaking equipment to ensure a good base. Fall often has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
