Lake-Lure
has been noted by National Geographic as "one of the ten most beautiful man-made lakes in the world." It sits like a jewel within the Hickory Nut Gorge among the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains just 26 miles southeast of Asheville. Guided, covered boat tours of the lake are available, which take visitors past miles of gorgeous shoreline and around Snake Island where you'll see many species of birds and wildlife. Lure Lake also has several locations that were used in the popular film, "Dirty Dancing." Twilight and dinner cruises are available April through October. The Beach at Lake Lure is a wonderful place for a family vacation. Catch some rays, play in the sand, and go swimming, water skiing, canoeing or boating. The Lake Lure Marina rents powerboats, canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and pontoon boats. Everything you need can be found right on the beach - concessions that serve hot dogs, drinks, pizza and other refreshments, beach supplies, restrooms, picnic areas, and inner tube rentals. Children love the Beach Water Works and its bumper boats, water canons, games and water slides. Sportswear and souvenir shops can also be found at the Lake Lure Marina, and lifeguards help ensure that your vacation is a safe one.

The Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations, although ski resorts rely on snowmaking equipment to ensure a good base. Fall often has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
