Rutherfordton is a town of approximately 4,000, located in the western foothills of North Carolina. This is the kind of place where small town charm and "down home" friendliness is a way of life. Rutherfordton has shady, tree-lined streets, small downtown shops and a town square filled with colorful flowers. For things to do, Rutherfordton is near many of the attractions of the Western Foothill area, such as Lake Lure. Recognized by National Geographic as "one of the ten most beautiful man-made lakes in the world," Lake Lure lies within the Hickory Nut Gorge and offers swimming, boating, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, pontoon boats and water skiing. Other attractions near Rutherfordton include Chimney Rock Park, with its 404-foot waterfall and "the Chimney," a 315-foot monolith located above the gorge. Hickory Nut Falls is one of the highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi and can be reached by hiking along the Skyline-Cliff Trail Loop to its top. An easier walk to the falls is "the Forest Stroll" to a platform at the bottom of the falls. Other points of interest in Chimney Rock Park include The Opera Box, Inspiration Point, Needles Eye and Exclamation Point. The Rutherfordton area also offers antique shops, great restaurants and accommodations from cozy bed and breakfasts to rustic cabins.

Rutherfordton Weather & Climate

The Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations, although ski resorts rely on snowmaking equipment to ensure a good base. Fall often has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
