Newland is a tiny village that sits on the banks of the North Toe River in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina. Located in Avery County in what is known as "High Country," this area is comprised mostly of small towns of less than 1,000 permanent residents, yet it is one of the most desirable tourist destinations in the southeastern United States. Newland is near many of the most popular North Carolina attractions such as Grandfather Mountain, Linville Falls and Linville Gorge, the Tweetsie Railroad and the Pisgah National Forest. It's also in the center of ski country, including Sugar Mountain, North Carolina's largest ski resort. Sugar Mountain boasts a 1200-foot vertical and has 20 trails and 8 lifts spread out over 115 acres. Besides downhill skiing, there are trails for snowboarding and snowshoeing, and a special tubing park. Newland offers many other recreational opportunities, as well, with 9 hiking trails, 6 waterfalls, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, fishing and golf. Avery County is host to the Highland Games and Gathering of the Scottish Clans each year and Newland village is near other mountain resort towns such as Banner Elk and Beech Mountain.

Newland Weather & Climate

North Carolina has the greatest range of altitude of any state east of the Mississippi River, ranging from sea level along the Atlantic coast to 6,684 feet at the summit of Mt. Mitchell in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Latitude accounts for climatic variations, as does soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. There is no distinct wet or dry season in North Carolina. Average snowfall in the southern mountains is around 16 inches, with some of the higher mountain peaks and upper slopes receiving as much as 50 inches per year. July is usually the wettest month. Summer rainfall is the most variable; daily showers are not uncommon, but periods of one to two weeks without rain are also normal. Autumn is the driest season, and also sees the greatest drop-off of temperature in the month of October.
