Banner-Elk
is nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina near the Sugar Mountain Ski Resort. This tiny tourist town is located within the Pisgah National Forest, and is surrounded by rugged mountains and crystal clear lakes and streams, making it a delightful, year round vacation wonderland. Sugar Mountain is the largest ski resort in North Carolina, and offers skiers and snowboarders 20 trails and 8 lifts spread out over 115 acres. Banner Elk also has championship golf courses, camping, horseback riding, whitewater rafting and numerous other outdoor activities. You can fish for fresh trout in a mountain stream, picnic beside the millpond, or hike the forest trails. Fall brings unparalleled beauty as the trees turn crimson, yellow and gold, and in winter, visitors enjoy the frosty, snow-covered peaks. Art galleries, inviting shops and boutiques, plus fine dining are all a part of the Banner Elk experience. Nearby attractions include Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, or the Blue Ridge Parkway, all within 20 miles of town. Banner Elk is home to the annual "Woolley Worm Festival," usually held in October. Many of the other picturesque, small towns in the area hold their own arts and crafts fairs and special events throughout the year, including some very festive 4th of July celebrations, complete with parades, picnics and fireworks displays.

The High Country in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina has four mild seasons that help support the busy tourist trade. The mountain valley temperatures average 6 to 8 degrees cooler than the nearby Piedmont region in the summer months, and near the mountain peaks, it can be 10-20 degrees cooler. Moist southerly winds are forced upward in passing over the mountain barrier, causing showers and thunderstorms in spring and summer. Due to mild summer temperatures, the mountains have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Summer nights are crisp and cool, but not too cold for camping or other outdoor activities. Although it does snow in the region, large amounts of snowfall and severe low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Therefore most ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply.
