Boone
is located east of Winston-Salem in the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains of northwest North Carolina. This charming town lies in the heart of the High Country, and was Blue Ridge Country Magazine's readers' choice for "Best Mountain Town" in 1998, 2000 and 2002. Located near the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway, the town of Boone is in the immediate vicinity of four of the best ski resorts in the Southeast. This is the best of mountain country - sheer cliffs, scenic rivers and untamed forests. Wintertime's frosty glow gives way to a profusion of wildflowers in the spring, and in fall, the mountains become a kaleidoscope of red, green and gold. Aside from some of the best skiing in the south, other popular activities include whitewater rafting, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, camping, and exploring the area caves and caverns. There are also seven public golf courses located near Boone. The region is known as a haven for artists who draw upon the beauty of the mountains for their inspiration. The town of Boone has numerous art galleries, showrooms, craft and antique shops, as well as a wide variety of restaurants and lodging. A short drive takes you to other High Country attractions such as The Blowing Rock, the Tweetsie Railroad and Grandfather Mountain, with its famous Mile-High Swinging Bridge.

The High Country in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina has four mild seasons that help support the busy tourist trade. The mountain valley temperatures average 6 to 8 degrees cooler than the nearby Piedmont region in the summer months, and near the mountain peaks, it can be 10-20 degrees cooler. Moist southerly winds are forced upward in passing over the mountain barrier, causing showers and thunderstorms in spring and summer. Due to mild summer temperatures, the mountains have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Summer nights are crisp and cool, but not too cold for camping or other outdoor activities. Although it does snow in the region, large amounts of snowfall and severe low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Therefore most ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply.
