Todd
is a historic little town located in Ashe County between Boone and Jefferson in the northwest corner of the state near the South Fork of the New River. The only thing that surpasses the beauty of this area is the number of recreational activities available. Todd is only a half-hour from the region's top ski areas, including Sugar Mountain. Located right along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the village of Todd in Ashe County offers spectacular vistas, waterfalls and crystal clear mountain streams. Just some of the outdoor sports available include snow skiing and snowboarding, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, gem mining, bird watching, golf and camping. Besides the Blue Ridge Parkway, attractions in the area include the Tweetsie Railroad, New River State Park, Grandfather Mountain, Mt. Jefferson State Park and the Appalachian Trail. The nearby town of Jefferson is the oldest town in the High Country of North Carolina and serves as the gateway to the region's state parks. Fine dining, art galleries and crafts and specialty shops can be found in Jefferson and its' sister city, West Jefferson. In addition to all of this, many special events are held in the neighboring towns of Ashe County, including the Christmas in July Arts Festival in Boone, the Spring Mountain Herb Festival in West Jefferson and the Todd New River Festival.

The High Country in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina has four mild seasons that help support the busy tourist trade. The mountain valley temperatures average 6 to 8 degrees cooler than the nearby Piedmont region in the summer months, and near the mountain peaks, it can be 10-20 degrees cooler. Moist southerly winds are forced upward in passing over the mountain barrier, causing showers and thunderstorms in spring and summer. Due to mild summer temperatures, the mountains have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Summer nights are crisp and cool, but not too cold for camping or other outdoor activities. Although it does snow in the region, large amounts of snowfall and severe low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Therefore most ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply.
