Fleetwood
is a small town located on U.S. Highway 221 between the cities of Jefferson and Boone. As part of Ashe County in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Fleetwood offers incredible scenery and unlimited recreational possibilities. Lavish rhododendrons grow everywhere in the countryside in late spring and early summer, and fall brings brilliant reds and golds to the mountains. Attractions near Fleetwood include Grandfather Mountain, which is one of the oldest mountains in the world and home to the Mile-High Swinging Bridge, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Tweetsie Railway and the quaint towns of Blowing Rock and Banner Elk. Many artists, photographers and craftspeople live in the area, so galleries, studios and showrooms, craft and antique shops abound in the mountains surrounding Fleetwood. The neighboring town of Jefferson is the oldest town in the "High Country" and serves as the county seat. Boone is another charming community near Fleetwood that was voted "Best Mountain Town" by readers of Blue Ridge Country Magazine in 1998, 2000 and 2002. Mt. Jefferson and New River State Parks are close by and offer swimming, fishing, canoeing, rafting, mountain biking and horseback riding. Four of the state's best ski resorts are in the vicinity and seven public golf courses offer visitors a chance to enjoy playing amid some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country.

The High Country in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina has four mild seasons that help support the busy tourist trade. The mountain valley temperatures average 6 to 8 degrees cooler than the nearby Piedmont region in the summer months, and near the mountain peaks, it can be 10-20 degrees cooler. Moist southerly winds are forced upward in passing over the mountain barrier, causing showers and thunderstorms in spring and summer. Due to mild summer temperatures, the mountains have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Summer nights are crisp and cool, but not too cold for camping or other outdoor activities. Although it does snow in the region, large amounts of snowfall and severe low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Therefore most ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply.
