Ocracoke
is a quaint village located on the southern soundside of Ocracoke Island within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Accessible only by water or air, Ocracoke Island is a barrier island that is part of the Outer Banks, and is famous for being the hideout for Blackbeard the Pirate. Once a busy fishing village, the whole town of Ocracoke is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes the Ocracoke Lighthouse, built in 1823. The British Cemetery and several commercial buildings are some of the other historical attractions on the island. Banker Ponies, descendants of horses brought to the island by early explorers, also still live here and are cared for by the National Park Service. Legends abound about how the ponies got on the island, but most historians believe they were brought here by the Raleigh expeditions and were left at the time of the mysterious disappearance of The Lost Colony. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is 16 miles of beautiful windswept beaches for swimming surfing, sunning and shelling. Other activities on the island include hiking, camping, fishing and birdwatching. Boats are also available on the island for charter fishing. Other attractions in the area include the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras Village. Ocracoke Island is accessible by ferry from Hatteras Village on Hatteras Island.

Ocracoke Weather & Climate
The Atlantic Coast of North Carolina has a temperate climate with no extremes in temperature. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inlands are calm, quiet and sheltered from the sea breezes. In winter, the Gulf Stream helps moderate air temperatures. Sometimes, strong low-pressure systems clash with the Gulf Stream and develop into major storms, causing rain along the coast and over states to the north as well. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year; about once in ten years they are strong enough to cause significant damage. Humidity does not vary much from season to season, but is generally highest in winter and lowest in spring. The highest levels are along the immediate coast, averaging around 75 percent.
