Hatteras-Village
is located on the shores of Pamlico Sound on Hatteras Island within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It's one of only two communities located on the southern end of Hatteras Island (the other being the village of Frisco.) Hatteras is also one of the only communities on the island to retain its' original name - with the "Village" often added to avoid confusion with the Cape Hatteras, located 13 miles to the north, or with Hatteras Inlet, about four miles to the south. Hatteras Village is a commercial fishing center and is the homeport for the island's famous charter fishing fleet. It almost goes without saying that fishing in Hatteras is superb, with the offshore Gulf Stream waters offering bottom fishing for snapper, grouper, trigger fish and sea bass. Flounder, blue fish and trout are caught in the inshore waters. Hatteras Village serves as the host town to several prestigious fishing tournaments each year. The village is also home to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, which is dedicated to the preservation and presentation of North Carolina's maritime history and shipwrecks of the Outer Banks. It is believed that over 600 ships have wrecked along this stretch of coast since the 16th century, a few of them visible at certain times from the beach. Cape Hatteras National Seashore covers 45 square miles of the island and is home to the tallest brick lighthouse in the country. Hatteras Village is also the outpost for the ferry to Ocracoke Island, once the hiking place of Blackbeard the Pirate.

Hatteras Village Weather & Climate

The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on North Carolina temperatures, especially on the immediate coast. Though the Gulf Stream lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from it and moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks. Coastal fronts are common during the winter months, and can push inland, bringing warmer than expected temperatures to the coastal areas. However, at times the cold Labrador Current passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, offsetting most of the general warming effect the Gulf Stream might otherwise have on coastal temperatures. The meeting of the two opposing currents sometimes provides a breeding ground for rough weather. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are lower than those even a few miles inland. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
