Waves
is a small community located on the northern end of Hatteras Island, the second village below the Oregon Inlet and the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. It is the second in a trio of villages that includes Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo. Originally, the entire area was one village called Chicamacomico, but by the early part of the 20th century, three distinct villages had become established. Waves was first called South Rodanthe, but eventually the name was changed to distinguish one town from the other. Like its' neighbor, Salvo, a drive through the village of Waves takes you past stacked crab pots, large nets, boats and fish boxes and other tools of the fishing trade. It's an interesting place to visit and a quiet spot from which to explore the whole island, most of which is covered by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which was the first national seashore in the country. Here, you can indulge in activities such as swimming, surfing, fishing, shelling, crabbing, hiking, camping, biking and birdwatching. Nearby sightseeing attractions include the historic village of Ocracoke on Ocracoke Island, Roanoke Island (site of the famous Lost Colony,) the North Carolina Aquarium, the North Carolina Maritime Museum and the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devil Hills. The things to see, do and experience on Hatteras Island, near the town of Waves, is almost endless - making it a perfect vacation destination.

Waves Weather & Climate

|

The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on North Carolina temperatures, especially on the immediate coast. Though the Gulf Stream lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from it and moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks. Coastal fronts are common during the winter months, and can push inland, bringing warmer than expected temperatures to the coastal areas. However, at times the cold Labrador Current passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, offsetting most of the general warming effect the Gulf Stream might otherwise have on coastal temperatures. The meeting of the two opposing currents sometimes provides a breeding ground for rough weather. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are lower than those even a few miles inland. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
