Lake-Hiwassee is located just four miles from the town of Murphy in the Nantahala National Forest in western North Carolina. A dam built by the Tennessee Valley Authority is also named Hiwassee, and is the highest over spill dam in the world at 307 feet. This beautiful mountain lake covers over 6,000 acres and has almost 188 miles of shoreline. The Hiwassee, Nottley and Valley Rivers feed it, and along with Appalachia Lake and Lake Chatuge, the three lakes are often referred to as the "Chain of Lakes." All three offer activities such as swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing and fishing against some of the most splendid scenery in the state. Appalachia Lake is the more private of the lakes because it has no developed recreation areas. Lake Hiwassee is well known for its' fishing for striped bass, bluegill, yellow perch and muskie. In fact, The National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame lists a record 54-pound striped bass caught in the lake. The Hanging Dog Recreation Area, located at Lake Hiwassee, provides picnic areas, hiking trails and a boat-launching ramp. Nearby, the Hiwassee River offers Class I and Class II whitewater rafting, plus it has a three-mile long stretch that is designated as a Trophy Trout Stream. Access to the river can be found in the town of Murphy. Other attractions near Lake Hiwassee include Fort Butler, the John C. Campbell Folk School and a Bible-based theme park.

Lake Hiwassee Weather & Climate

The Mountains, due to their mild summer temperatures, have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Midsummer afternoon temperatures average only around 80 degrees at elevations of 3,000 feet or higher. Nights are crisp and cool, but seldom too cold for outdoor activities or camping. In winter, snowfall is likely most years, but ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply. Large amounts of snow and extreme low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Rainfall is common in spring and summer. In spring, storm systems that bring cold weather southward reach North Carolina less often and less forcefully than in other parts of the country. Occasional invasions of cool dry air from the north continue during the summer, but are of short duration. Fall has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
