Murphy is the county seat of Cherokee County, located within the Nantahala National Forest southwest of Asheville. In Murphy, visitors find a peaceful, small town filled with history and Native American folklore. The county has seven sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places, which includes Fort Butler, a 19th century frontier fort and stockade for the Cherokee Indians, the Cherokee County Court House in Murphy, the Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery and the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown. Murphy is also the site of a Bible based theme park, which features the world's largest set of the Ten Commandments and other Biblical monuments. The Hiawassee Lake, near Murphy, covers over 6,000 acres with almost 180 miles of shoreline. Lake Hiawassee feeds into Appalachia Lake, and along with Lake Chatuge, these three lakes are often referred to as the Chain of Lakes. Enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, water-skiing, rafting or tubing against a picturesque mountain backdrop. In Murphy, there is easy access to the Hiawassee River, which is a Class I and II whitewater rafting river, with a 3-mile stretch designated as a Trophy Trout Stream. Whitewater rafting and kayaking are also available on the Nantahala and Ocoee Rivers. Appalachia Lake has no developed recreation areas, and makes an excellent choice for those seeking the solitude and tranquility of a quiet mountain lake.

Murphy Weather & Climate

The Mountains, due to their mild summer temperatures, have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Midsummer afternoon temperatures average only around 80 degrees at elevations of 3,000 feet or higher. Nights are crisp and cool, but seldom too cold for outdoor activities or camping. In winter, snowfall is likely most years, but ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply. Large amounts of snow and extreme low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Rainfall is common in spring and summer. In spring, storm systems that bring cold weather southward reach North Carolina less often and less forcefully than in other parts of the country. Occasional invasions of cool dry air from the north continue during the summer, but are of short duration. Fall has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
